"Can one binge make you fat?"

"Think of the last time you ate a big meal then weighed yourself the next day. Perhaps it was Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s, and your scale showed a gain of several pounds. But how much of that is fat?

Very little, it turns out.

There are about 9 food calories in a gram of fat, so in theory you could gain one pound of fat (454 g) by eating some 4,000 calories more than you burn. The actual number may be closer to 3,500,[1] so if you eat 500 extra calories per day for a week, you might gain a pound of fat.

But not if you eat 3,500 calories in a single meal. There’s a limit as to how much food your body can turn into fat in just a few hours. What your body cannot process for storage during that time, it tries to burn (your temperature rises slightly) and to excrete (you end fighting with your family for access to the toilets).

And of course, digestion itself has an energy cost."

"While regular overeating leads to fat gain, a lot of the weight you gain from just one binge will simply be water, especially if your starting glycogen stores are low and your food rich in carbs."

I’m not a proponent of appetite suppressants. For many here binging has nothing to do with hunger and everything to do with filling and emotional hole, wacko brain chemistry from years of obesity and yo-yo dieting , or soothing anxiety. People talk all the time about BIG PHARM shoving stupid, dangerous drugs down our throats yet people willingly step up for appetite suppressants, sleeping pills, tranquilizers and God only knows what else. Behavior modification is a useful tool. Many things out there that can be a helpful adjunct to helping get these issues under control. It’s not comfortable or easy, but so many here are doing such a GREAT job of doing it. I so admire your perseverance.

@Kenna - this site was the first I'd been to that helped me understand I needed to EAT to lose weight. No extremes. Just day by day staying with a small deficit. It was when I stopped showing up things got out of control. I thought I could go it alone and when I couldn't I'd fall back on the BED then the starve and binge and purge. It's all about modification and finding 'that thing' that helps deal with the disorder.

I don’t know if you have read other things that I have written, but I am a believer in not restricting food groups, building OCCASIONAL treats into your WOE, NEVER USING THE TERM DIET, NEVER USING THE TERM CHEAT MEAL. This is a lifestyle for long term that allows you to eat real food, real pizza etc. the only catch is you need to be able to learn portion control, moderation and build some type of physical activity into your regular life. I have mentored many extremely overweight people on this journey successfully. The important thing is that not even one regained their weight. I’ve been doing this for 40 years off and on. It is not a business or a profession. I just meet people who are good candidates for success and agree to help them.

Still sucks when it doesn't come off...water or not. I'm in a deficit 95% of the time. According to the math should be losing 8-10# a month but I'm more today than end of March. Waiting patiently but it still irritates me, dear.

Thanks for the kind words and lol at the trolls including Terra and Chris. I know it sucks, dear. Bella, on the subject of increased metabolism, yes, binging does increase it temporarily. I think this article mentions it.
