OK, I need a little advice. I'm going on a trip to see a friend and I will be there for about five days. It will be my first trip since I started losing weight and I am worried that I will eat way too much of way too many bad things. What does everyone else do when they go on trips out of town to keep up with their diet?

First thing is just relax and enjoy the vacation. What I do is take one scoop of something and count that as 1 cup and I know that I shouldn't eat more than 4 cups per a meal and I try to eat more of protein than anything else.

get a good phone app for keeping track of what you eat. if you go to a restaurant, plan ahead and know exactly what you are going to eat. be careful of snacks, treats and alcohol.

In addition to the above, look for menu's with healthier choices. I also take half my food "to go" or split with a friend. Example, when I go to my favorite Mexican place, I will get sizzling chicken fajitas with grilled chicken breast, onions and peppers. I do usually use the guacamole and sour cream/salsa... but skip the beans and rice. Even then, I eat half at the restaurant and half for the next day lunch. If I do go to a fast food place, I stick with water and skip the fries. I had lost all my weight from having babies and then went on a 6 week road trip. It was interesting, but I managed to keep "healthier" choices than I normally would on a trip. I also do a lot of sight seeing that requires walking/hiking. But really, it is getting easier and easier to find restaurant nutrition info on the various apps... especially if you go to some of the big chain restaurants.

JeanineDS, that sounds good. I need to make better choices when I go out to eat.

Wandering, here is my strategy: 1) Ask your friend to support you in your journey 2) Keep logging your food, no matter how bad it gets 3) Check out the menus and restaurants online in advance of going there if possible and make your choice of food before arriving to avoid being tempted and too hungry and so you know what your calories will be 4) avoid alcohol because a) it's loaded with sugar and b) it causes poor judgement in having things you ought not 5) no matter what, have fun with your friend and get back on track when you get home if things go awry. Remember these three words: PREPARATION IS EVERYTHING. Have a blast and let us know how it goes!

Thanks guys! Everyone is so awesome! I will remember all of this and hopefully I won't be too hard on myself for anything I choose to do. Doing lots of walking and sight seeing shouldn't be too hard. Normally when I go here, which is oakland ca, we walk absolutely everywhere or take BART. I park the car and don't drive it again until I leave for home. So thanks everyone!!!!

My tricks are packing and munching on veggies or dried fruit, sticking to lighter meals when going out (soups, salads, fish) and always asking for any dressings in lite and on the side. It may sound like you are being picky, but it's worth it!

Really depends which diet you're following. Low carb, high fat? Pack macadamia nuts, hard cheese, pork rinds, dried beef ; high carb, low fat? fruit snacks, veggie sticks... I think that the most important thing is to get support from people you're with and not let them talk you into "come on, you're on vacation... live a little!" That's the most detrimental of all arguments. Guess what? They're not going to be the ones paying the price After vacation: YOU will!
