I haven't struggled with body image issues much since my mid-20s, but I'm struggling with one now. Sagging skin on my upper arms. This happened the last time I got down to this weight in 2015, and I think it was one of the things that led me to regain.

I'm in my mid-50s, so I'm wondering if this is something I need to learn to live with it. Has anyone found anything that helps? I'm wondering if strength training might help. I don't do it, even though I know I should. Suggestions welcome.

If this is the tradeoff I need to make to be thinner, I'll take it. But dang, I don't like it 😕

I've been using collagen powder and 2 lb weights. it just takes much longer when we're older.

I’m using daily collagen & biotin gummies and a collagen powder. Hydration is important. Fasting is supposed to help too- the excess protein in excess skin is supposed to be the protein the body breaks down during fasting- that’s why people who fast to lose weight vs gastric bypass etc have less loose skin and rarely need excess skin removal surgery after losing significant weight. Check out Dr. Jason Fungs videos he describes the process much better than I could.

Thanks all! You've given me hope, if nothing else. I'll try the strength training. I need to do that anyway

I definitely still have the baggage of the loose skin from when I weighed nearly 350. You and I are still way better off at this weight than our former weights. Good luck with your workout efforts.

Considerably better off, Draglist! 👍 I'll accept some wrinkly skin over hauling more weight on the ski trails

I haven’t started yet Writingwyo, but I need to do lifts also. I don’t want to either, yet I don’t like dieting either. I think barbells are the answer, if not just to be strong enough to hit a burglar with it.😮😆

Weights truly help—at least for me. I have been here since 2012 and stuck because I haven’t been to gym. I do light weights sporadically. Like some also have loose skin. The older I get the harder to lose. Weights build muscle, muscle burns fat. Body image, know it all too well. Fantasy of surgery, but won’t take those risks, let it hang baby 😁

Shrewdness -- I've been looking up isometric and body weight strength training videos on YouTube, and am going to try that. I've never really liked lifting weights, although I enjoyed lifting heavy stuff as part of useful work. I put myself through college selling paint, and stocking paint shelves will get you ripped 😜 I miss my muscles from those days!

I’m 62, yes, I have the loose skin on my upper arms ( and other places) but my arms look better now than 5 years ago. I lift moderate weights 2x week, and the muscle tone is so much better than it was. My arms and shoulders now have definition even w the loose skin. I’m stronger too. Age and gravity will effect us all if we live long enough, so I try to have peace w that fact and just strive to be fit, healthy, balanced and independent as long as I am able. Blessing on your health journey.

Yes, strength training, particularly hypertrophy training will help. You have to lift a challenging weight though. No arm flapping with 1lb wristlets attached lol. If you grow your muscle, it will give more shape and a "toned" look to your arms and any other body part. It might not completely fix the appearance of sagging skin depending on how much you have but developing one's muscles almost always improves body shape especially if you haven't done it seriously before.

I love body weight training and it's part of my weekly routine but most beginners are not strong enough to perform the best compound upper body movements (push-ups, pull-ups, dips) and have to start with a regression that is often not going to challenge individual body parts to grow. That's where weights are useful. You might not be strong enough to to a chin-up but you can curl 5lbs. As you build strength, you also have a way better foundation to correctly execute the best basic bodyweight movements.
