This is a PSA for plant-based folks. I've found some fabulous recipes for plant-based substitutes for some cheeses (ricotta, parm). I just looked at a recipe for a plant-based spinach artichoke dip. If you find a recipe that tastes/looks remarkably like the real thing, please, please don't bring it to a potluck or any other gathering where you may not be able to tell every single person there that it's vegan and what's in it. I make really good ricotta from cashews and tofu. I have a brother with life threatening nut and bean allergies. If he were to dip into my ricotta thinking it was the real thing, it could send him to the ER or even kill him. I say this because I was just on a vegan recipe website where someone was bragging about everyone wanting the recipe for a dip made with cashews that she took to a wedding. No matter how proud you might be that you recreated a favorite dish without animal products, please be aware of common allergens

I tend to avoid eating at potlucks as the only time I got food poisoning was from eating at a friend's house. I thought I would die.

I've only tried vegan/fake cheese once, from a vegan friend that wanted to convert me from my vegetarianism a couple of years ago. Stuff was awful. I love being a vegan now, but still avoid "twisty" foods, like fake cheese and fake meats. Your Public Service Announcement is good stuff -- plenty of people are also lactose intolerant, too, and a lot of stuff at picnics are made with milk.

I have many food allergies, for me I enjoy the whole foods that are brought to a pot lucks so I know exactly what I am eating.

Yikes, Morticia! That would put me off of potlucks, too!

JustBananas -- good point on lactose, too. I think I worry most about traditional foods made with unexpected ingredients. The deceptive look-alikes. About vegan cheese -- I can't say I care for the commercial stuff, and one of the homemade recipes I tried was so awful it was inedible. That said, I've found some good recipes now that earned my omnivore husband's approval 😊

Little Red Fox -- whole foods do indeed work

When I was vegetarian I ate sooooo much cheese. Never drank milk and rarely ate ice cream because I hated the film it left in my mouth. Cheese was my reason to avoid veganism (never cared enough about honey or eggs). Turned 47, Enter Lactose intolerance: gas, bloating, can't go, etc. I've been without cheese long enough now that I've lost my taste for it. Thank goodness. A lot of cons: expensive, high in saturated fat, caused my LDL to increase. My SIL is Chinese and thinks dairy products are gross, so I'm trying to channel her.😄 She also weighs like a feather!

JB - I tried to go vegetarian (not vegan) before a few times, and I tended to live on bread and cheese when I did. Then, I'd get rip-ravin' cold sores and decide it was because I really needed some meat in my diet rather than realizing how unbalanced my diet was. I've been much more cognizant this time as to what constitutes a healthy vegetarian or vegan diet. I found it easier than I thought it would be to give up cheese this time, even though I ate massive amounts of it, even as an omnivore

I went vegetarian when I was 16, not knowing squat about nutrition, and by 18 my hair was brittle from lack of protein (didn't eat a lot of cheese at that point because my mom was buying the groceries). So before I left for University, I visited a registered dietician (as a student I qualified for free health services through a state agency). I learned about food combining for balanced protein from her. But then I was in school with open buffets of cheese for toppings, and the daily consumption began. Veganism wasn't popular back in the '90s.

Guess I'm not much for bringing homemade concoctions to potlucks. I tend to favor buying something to bring. Individual wrapped servings work well. Yes, it often costs a little more than preparing from scratch but with large groups it's not necessary to buy enough to feed everyone attending. It's a collective effort when it's a large event. I just bring what's considered to be a normal generous amount to contribute. Buying something prepackaged from the store allows people to make their own decision about whether the calories and ingredients are OK for them. It's more sanitary, easier to transport and saves me time and clean up at home.

@Losingtowin: I would LOVE it if people brought those individual, refridgerated cut fruits mixes (with the mixed berries or mixed melons), or even the "individually wrapped" bananas or apples! Unfortunately, they bring snack bags of chips or other garbage carbs from Hostess or Little Debbie. They're sanitary but processed junk food that you can find in a vending machine. 😒

Ha ha JustBananas! I think they bring those things because they look forward to taking them home ;)
