Still getting over this cold, and my husband's not in great shape either. It's been survival eating and scrounging.

That said, it's a good reminder how important it is to create a healthy food environment within your own home. Yes, I've been craving starch, sugar and salt, but because of what food I have in the house, there's a lower limit. I might slather a big slice of my husband's whole wheat bread with honey because it's the only thing that sounds good, but I'm not going to attack the snack cakes or pretzels, because they're not in the house in the first place. Sure, I could run to the store for them, but if I don't feel up to fixing a real breakfast, do you think I'm going to put on my shoes and coat and grab my keys?

Now, a rant, perhaps an unfair one. If you're one of those people keeping treats in the house "for the kids," stop it, or at least reel it in to a reasonable level. I mean, seriously...what are you doing?? I visited my family this month and saw, to my horror, that my niblets are getting pudgy on a steady diet of chicken nuggets and pre-packaged, ultraprocessed snacks. They're being set up for the same battles with weight and food that the rest of the family struggles with. Kids are not going to keel over from missing one snack. If they turn up their nose at the offer of an apple instead of a snack cake, they're clearly not all that hungry. Rant over.

Feel better Writingwyo! I hear you on the rant!! When I see all the chubby little kids come in and out of the post office...usually they are carrying something to eat....candy, chips, soda. The 7 year olds that come in are closer to 100 lbs than the 40-75 pound range they should be in. Their Mom's and Dad's are overweight...but counting calories and exercising to reduce it down....why can't they see what they are doing to the kids by allowing them to eat all the same crap they are now trying to avoid????

Totally agree. Why avoid unhealthy food and then give it to your significant other or your kids? Trying to kill them? And, yes, some food is unhealthy, regardless of what people believe. Highly processed junk food with minimal nutritional value should be considered an occasional treat, if one must eat it. Mot something to live on.

People in this house love treats. I look at the cupboard and there are more treats that real foods in there. Sooo...I just have to roll with it. Glad you are getting better

Natural food sources? It is not salted chips in a bag, mayonnaise in a jar and bleached white bread

IMO, they're just passing along their own addictions and poor habits. My father got insistent that the kids would want fast food shakes and fries with dinner, but we suspect it's because he wanted to go to the fast food place himself. (In addition, the kids had ice cream at lunch that day. Fortunately, he was voted down.) My sister is constantly offering her kids snacks, without even waiting for them to ask. My brother doesn't like vegetables, so his kids barely eat any fruit or veg. Sensing a pattern here? It's hard to watch the cycle continue.
