Continuing to maintain my weight. I walk an average of 45 miles per week. This includes just walking around the house doing chores as well as walking to destinations instead of driving or taking public transit. As for "diet", I eat pretty much what I want or desire, but am constantly aware of when I am satisfied (not full). At 72 years of age, I'm doing pretty well. The same weight and pant size I was when I finished college. Yes, I have aches and pain - right knee and left ankle - but I work through it. Oh, and no bread after 12 noon (usually). I do NOT weigh myself every day. Look better, but more important, no blood pressure or cholesterol issues and no pills!!! And I can climb 5 or 6 floors of stairs without being winded! Who says 72 is old!

You are an example that it's not "normal" to gain weight with age. Bravo/brava!

Many people gain weight with age because our metabolisms do slow and for many their activity levels decrease as well due to aches, pains, medical issues. So important to stay active — you just have to alter your activities to accommodate any issues you have. If you can’t run, you walk, if you can’t walk you do core exercises from a chair. There is something out there for everyone who is determined to do something in the physical activity arena. Pool exercises are magic. No effects of gravity in the pool.

You are rockin' it and redefining what it means to age well! High five, sista!

I fully agree, Kenna! What I find sad is that the "normalization" of weight gain tends to begin much before people have significant aches or medical issues (say by our mid-30s). We cave in to common excuses (with "I don't have time" at the top) and decrease our amount of activity while increasing our food/beverage consumption (with "I deserve it / I haver earned it" as the #1 justification). I saw it in myself (though I luckily became aware of it and reversed the process), and am seeing it every day in friends and relatives who were quite thin at their 20s and are overweight or obese by their mid-40s.

I second that on pool exercises like @Kenna mentioned. I have hip issues although I am in my 30s. There is definitely something out there for everyone to be active. I am still trying to find a stride and learning. Yoga is also great as well! It isn't just good for stretching but also for strengthening as well.

Good job taking care of yourself! I recently lost a 94 yr old friend who walked every day. She just kept on.

Awesome! Old is so much determined by how someone takes care of herself... My mom and stepmom are the same age, one is obese and the other is relatively active and close to ideal weight. It's sad to see how "old" one is compared to the other. So encouraging that you aren't on medication either. Good for you!

I never thought I'd get so many positive comments. By the way, I'm male. Walking and exercise is only part of the program. A lot has to do with what I eat and ever more, how much. I use the "mindfulness" method. I make myself aware of exactly what I'm craving and then, when I'm satisfied. I'm not much of a calorie counter and not a detail person, so I just keep aware of how I feel about food. I'm also a home cook (and a pretty good one at that) so I make most of our food, all our bread. My sister is 5 years older than I am - 77 next birthday. Unfortunately, she is grossly overweight and has severe mobility issues. She's not happy with her life and I can't blame her. But she shouldn't be comparing herself to me and no one Thank you all for your positive support. I really believe that if I can maintain a healthy life style anyone can.
