Thanks everyone. This was after a day of compensation for the day before. :-) Calorie-averaging over a number of days can be an effective strategy. I don't specifically count calories, as you may know, but I do have a sense of how much food is normal for me, and of what pushes me over my limit. Get your protein and your veggies (have I said that before?), and everything else is flexible on any given day. Take the "everything else" in small or large amounts, or leave it altogether. Yesterday I left most of it, having had way too much the day before. I still had my protein and veggies, but I guess I lost the temporary carb-loading water weight.

(And it's all calorie averaging, to some extent, isn't it? Eat more for a couple of years, spend a few months compensating — or whatever time frame each of us may be dealing with...)
