i've been off and on low carb this year, more off than on. i plan to do a 2-day fast within the next few weeks to start myself off with a "clean slate." in the meantime, i think i'll eat a low-ish carb diabetic diet: 40-50 carbs at each meal, 15 carbs as a snack.
Started at NARS this month.

I had a great holiday season and really enjoyed eating whatever I wanted. Luckily, I didn't feel too carb-addled from indulging, and I was able to go right back to low carb on January 1. Yes, I gained 11 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year, but I still feel good and am eager to feel even better! Yay for low carb!

I weigh myself every morning, but I only record a weight after I've seen it for several mornings in a row. Between recorded weigh-ins, my weight can go up or down by several pounds each day.
Most remarkably, I am losing weight even with more than occasional carb fests. This past Sunday I went out to breakfast at Le Peep and ordered the Omni Omelet, which looked like a good low-carb choice. Imagine my shock when I looked at its nutrition count later: 68 carbs! Now, I ate only a few bites of the potatoes and nibbled a little buttered part off the English muffin, so I'm sure I didn't eat 68 carbs, but still. . . . My only explanation is that one day of excess carbs does not hinder weight loss for me. Instead, it's the carbs eaten day-in and day-out that can add up to gaining weight.
On previous diets, I would diligently count calories or fat grams or balance macro nutrients to keep myself in the Zone. Inevitably, I would go through periods of 1-4 weeks with no further weight loss. Perhaps my body benefits from eating varying levels of carbs.

This last weekend I had cravings and ended up doing some semi-controlled but unhealthy eating. This morning I ate a good low-carb breakfast, but for lunch (just now) I had Progresso canned soup. I was being a bit hard on myself for feeling hungry. I guess I'm not used to feeling hungry, so I assume I'm doing something wrong if I am hungry. However, it had been 4 hours since breakfast--not as long as I sometimes can go comfortably between meals, but not so short as to be unreasonable to feel hunger. My stomach hunger is gone, and I feel less antsy now. Maybe I need to stop looking at recipes on the Internet:-)
Can't explain my behavior, but I just ate 8 oz of cream cheese (warmed in the microwave) sweetened with Splenda. Maybe I needed dessert?
And did I forget to mention that I'm going to Cafe Roux after work?

Saturday night I experienced some severe cravings, but since I had nothing crave-satisfying in the house, I ignored them and went to bed early.
The cravings continued on Sunday, so when I went grocery shopping, I picked up a few items that I hoped would satisfy: 2 apples and a bag of Splenda-sweetened dark chocolates (Russell Stover). I ate one chocolate (about 4 carbs) on the way home, letting it dissolve slowly in my mouth, and it was wonderful. When I got home, I had two more chocolates and put the bag away. So far, so good.
For dinner, I ate a can of the Progresso soup that had been on sale that day; not Induction low carb, but not crazy high carb either. Then I ate the Fuji apple. Oh, how sweet and crispy and juicy! It was heavenly.
I lay down to take a nap and ended up eating a few chocolates, again letting them melt in my mouth while I was falling asleep. Woke later and ate more chocolates while I watched "Once Upon A Time." I finally admitted to myself that I was not in control of my eating, that those chocolates were at the forefront of my mind. I ate the rest of them and called it a day. All in all, not my best day, but certainly not my worst either.
What I did wrong:
I didn't analyze my craving sufficiently to figure out exactly what would satisfy me. http://www.naturopathyworks.com/pages/cravings.php
I didn't give the apple treat enough of a chance.
I bought too much: an entire bag of chocolates. Should have bought a single piece of chocolate or just a few pieces.
I didn't try to combat the craving by eating some fat. A cream cheese/Splenda treat or a piece of juicy, fatty meat might have helped me turn the corner.
I didn't take a walk. Supposedly, exercise can help curb cravings.
I didn't but a Sonic diet cherry limeade, which I have found helpful in the past.
What I did right:
I bought Splenda-sweetened dark chocolate, not sugar sweetened.
I limited the damage: 1 bag of 20 SF chocolates rather than a 64 oz. bag of peanut M&Ms.
I drank some diet Shasta root beer with lots of ice in an effort to quell the craving.
I ate an apple.
I didn't beat myself up for "failing," and I didn't give up eating low carb entirely just because of this one cave-in.
